Henri
Emile Matisse
Benoît:
(1869-1954), a French painter, was one
of the most influential artists of the 1900's.
The fauves
He was the leader of the fauves, a group of painters who started the
first important art movement of the era. Matisse was also noted sculptor,
book illustrator, and tapestry designer.
The subjects
Matisse's favorite subjects included human figures, still lifes, and
scenes of interiors. He believed that a painting was more important as
an object of art than as a representation of reality. He made no attempt
to create the illusion of realistic forms and space. Instead he used
intense nd lines to produce patterns and a sense of movement. Some
critics believe that Matisse has no equal in the use of color among
artists of the 1900's. His paintings feature unusual color combinations
and elaborate patterns.
Le Cateau
Matisse's works, especially those of the 1920's, have a decorative
quality similar to the art the Near and Middle East. Matisse was born in
Le Cateau, near Cambrai. He entered law school in 1887 but began to
paint in 1890 as a pastime while recovering from n operation. In 1891,
Matisse moved to Paris to study art. In the early 1890's he painted with
dark colors. But he showed the influence of the bright colors of the
impressionist in his painting "The Dinner Table" 1897. In 1905, Matisse
and the other fauve painters held an exhibition of their work. The
brilliant colors and bold patterns of these paintings shocked the Paris
at world. One of matisse's fauve paintings "Landscape at Collioure".
Paul Cézanne
From 1907 to about 1920, Matisse painted increasingly solid designs that
reflected the influence of the French artist Paul Cézanne and of the
cubists. Matisse also did his most important work as a sculptor during
this period. In his last years, Matisse created simple and abstract
compositions made of cut paper. From 1948 to 1951, he designed and
decorated the Chapel of the Rosary in Vence, France.
